Progestrone

Progesterone is secreted by the corpus luteum, which forms from the follicle that contained the mature egg released at ovulation. Progesterone is essential for controlling the menstrual cycle and maintaining pregnancy.

Once the egg is released, the corpus luteum begins secreting progesterone to prepare for pregnancy. If the egg is fertilised, progesterone increases blood flow in the endometrium, prepares the lining of the uterus for implantation and stimulates glands in the endometrium to provide nutrients for the growing embryo. Progesterone continues to support the pregnancy until the placenta takes over at around 8 – 12 weeks.

If the egg is not fertilised, the corpus luteum breaks down, progesterone levels drop and the menstrual cycle starts again.

Progesterone can help to improve your mood by reducing anxiety and helping with mood swings. However this is not always the case, and in some women it may trigger their anxiety.

Too much progesterone is generally not an issue. However, too little can cause problems including irregular periods and heavy menstrual bleeding. Low progesterone in pregnancy can cause miscarriage and early labour.
