Fertility Friday – Myth # 3

Myth #3: You can get pregnant at any time of the month

If you are trying to fall pregnant, this would be great! But the reality is very different.

The female egg is released once a cycle and has a lifespan of 12 – 24 hours.

Male sperm can survive for around 5 days once in the females reproductive tract given the right conditions.

So putting that together, the fertile window is about 5 – 6 days of the month maximum where you can potentially fall pregnant.

If you are wanting to fall pregnant, it is best to try at least every second day in the lead up to ovulation. And at least one to two days after. If you don’t want to fall pregnant, this is the time to avoid!

Of course you need to know when you ovulate to work out when this fertile window is. If your cycle is regular, it will be slightly easier to pinpoint than if your cycle is irregular. There are a few tools like cervical mucus tracking and ovulation prediction kits that may assist in working this out.

If you are struggling to fall pregnant, have long or short cycles or can’t quite work out when your fertile window is, we would love to help you.
