Weird Period Symptoms – Period Flu

Period flu.

It’s not really the flu, but it certainly feels like it.

Sore throat, headache, joint pain, digestive issues, fatigue, temperature, night sweats and generally feeling blah.

Some women actually experience what feels like the onset of the flu in the few days leading up to their period.

What causes these symptoms?

Once again, there is no agreed upon reason.

It could be hormones. Some say the drop in oestrogen and progesterone in the luteal phase before your period begins could cause symptoms similar to the flu. Oestrogen is thought to be the main culprit.

It could be inflammation. When we get our periods, a chemical called prostaglandin is released. These hormones are made at injury sites, during infection and in damaged tissue. They control inflammation which in turn leads to healing. They also cause flu like symptoms!

So what can you do?

– Speak to your Acupuncturist about helping to balance your hormones throughout your cycle

– Talk to a Naturopath about hormone testing and supplementing with nutrients to help balance your hormones.
